Choosing a College: A Serious Consideration

Writer: DeBree FootballDeBree Football

Choosing a college can be a challenging decision, particularly when faced with multiple offers from various college football programs. It is essential to take the time to get to know the coaches and establish meaningful relationships with them.

Key Considerations

  • Campus Visits: Make sure to visit each college, as this will be your home for the next four years. Experiencing the campus atmosphere firsthand is crucial. Because if you do not like the campus on a visit then ask yourself if the campus is something you can live with. If not then you should look at other options.

  • Coaching Staff: Ensure that you connect well with all of the coaches. Take time to talk to as many coaches as possible. Ask about the school, ask about the program, talk football, and talk about your goals. Saying nothing on a visit will not help you at all. Remember, the coaches support and guidance will be vital throughout your college experience.

  • Team Dynamics: Interact with the team members to gauge whether you fit in with them. Most of the time coaches will bring in team members during a visit. Talk to them about their favorite part of the program is, ask them what they like to do on campus, and ask their favorite part of the college. Team chemistry is important for both your athletic and social life.

  • Desire to Recruit: Choose a program that genuinely wants you as much as you want to be a part of it. Mutual enthusiasm can lead to a more fulfilling experience. If you have to force a coach to give you a visit then that might not be the place for you. I am not saying don't put yourself out there to be seen, but if you have sent them your film and they have seen it but they did not give a visit, then you should probably look for a different place. This is not a bad thing, it just means that this school is not the right fit for you.

  • Parental Guidance: Discuss your options with your parents. Nobody knows you better than your parents. So when it comes to looking for a college, they will have your best interests at heart. Plus they already know your likes and dislikes, so they can give an outside perspective from what you are seeing to help you make a decision. Their insights and experiences can provide valuable perspectives.

  • Personal Reflection: Most importantly, take the time to reflect and pray about your decision. The lord will never lead you in the wrong direction. If you talk to him about a college and going there or not going there is heavy on your heart then you know your answer. Trusting your instincts and seeking guidance can lead to a more confident choice.

In summary, choosing the right college is a significant decision that requires careful consideration of various factors. Take your time, weigh your options, and make a choice that aligns with your goals and aspirations.
